De Plaets + Amsterdam

A true city icon dressed in red.

About the project

Reckoning at Damrak

Hotel De Roode Leeuw is an Amsterdam icon on the bustling Damrak, welcoming guests for more than a century. Since 1911, it has paired its central location close to 'De Bijenkorf' and 'De Dam' with a brasserie known for modern Dutch cuisine.

Tucked away in the basement, De Plaets feels like a hidden spot beneath the city — a brasserie, lounge and meeting place where the energy of Amsterdam quietly continues below street level.

Historical architecture
Pops of red

A quiet dialogue between past and present.

Every surface, material and curve tells a story. Centuries of history echo through this historic inn, where travelers and locals once gathered to celebrate, meet and linger. The design translates this heritage into a contemporary rhythm of space, light and material.

Brass, velvet and warm wood create a layered interior where organic forms soften the city’s energy and invite conversation and pause. Today, innovation adds a new dimension: projection mapping transforms the dining experience, using light and imagery to present dishes in a subtle and immersive way.
