The Slaak + Rotterdam
About the project
History meets imagination
Located on the edge of Kralingen, The Slaak Rotterdam with its restaurant now called 't Slaakhuys' occupies the monumental Slaakhuys, once home to the printing offices of Het Vrije Volk. Here, history meets imagination.
The optimism and creative pulse of 1950s design merge with contemporary comfort, creating a place where every corner carries a story. The hotel’s design draws inspiration from the building’s publishing past: rooms are themed around the world of printing and writing, each conceived as a creative space for writers and artists.

Heritage and design flowing together
Helge and Vahid Kiumarsi started with the building itself. Its robust structure, generous ceiling heights and concrete columns carry the memory of its past life. Instead of softening that edge, we worked with it. The architecture stays honest and solid. Everything we added brings warmth, tactility and human scale.
The materials do the heavy lifting. Deep woods, veined marble, brushed brass and natural stone create weight and permanence. You feel it in the bar top, the stair details, the custom joinery. These materials age beautifully and give the hotel a sense of longevity rather than trend.
